Your Featured Hunting Article : Types of Hunting Dogs

Hunting dogs are not only man's best friend but they have proven a valuable partner in bird hunting. Dog hunting is as old as hunting itself and hunters have always realized that hunting dogs are there to assist them. Such an extensive use of dogs has developed a sort of science which has allowed dogs to be bred into different types of hunting dogs for various types of hunting, such as the general hunting dogs; sporting or gun dogs; or scent hounds. The origin of today's gun dog breeds began in Western Europe in the 1400's. At that time the dogs were pointers used in locating game. As hunting became more refined and the skills of hunters sharpened, other types of hunting dogs were developed such as the flushing setter and spaniel breeds.

In England, to go on a hunt may require many different types of hunting dogs - pointing and flushing hunting dogs located game in the surrounding brush; the windhounds coursed it down; terriers went underground after the game if it went into the burrows; and the scenthounds tracked it down if it ran across country. But over time, the hunt simplified itself, with the sporting dogs maintaining a wide tolerance of people and little territoriality due to the fact they are mostly used by non-owners for hunting. As you can imagine, a tolerance for other dogs and humans is a needed requirement for hunting dogs. This is especially true of hunting lodge and hunting businesses that hires hunting dogs out. A good hunting dog has to be able to understand and more importantly, obey the commands of a stranger and hunt as if it were for his owner.

Hunting dogs are highly disciplined and do not show aggression toward the prey like a family pet out playing. Professional hunting dogs do not want to do anything to scare off the prey and are closely tuned in to their master's wishes. Their behavior is focused, silent, intense, to allow for the catch. Other types of skills and behavior demonstrate what the types of hunting dogs do over another - the scent hounds on their leashes can pick up tracks and scents that other dogs may miss, one that is many days old. On the other hand, a good pointer can point and freeze birds that assume they are well hidden from view and the popular retrievers can retrieve birds in freezing water all day long without any complaints. The dog forever replaced the bird in England for hunting.

The types of hunting dogs have changed a lot over the years and from one country to another with their breeders and handlers taking great pride in their achievements. But no one more appreciates a good hunting dog than the hunter. For as much as has changed in the world of hunting the bond between man and dog has remained strong. Different countries breed different hunting dogs for hunting different types of game birds in their country. Some hunters will travel overseas to hunt, while others prefer to hunt in their back yard.
